The Honors Think Tank on Pace of Life

University of Utah College of Humanities

About Us

We are a University of Utah think tank on the topic of quality of life. As the course description runs,

We explored the question of living “a good life” rather than “the good life” (as it is commonly formulated in our society). The course was designed to explore basic but often unexamined assumptions about contemporary life(style) and invited students to consider deeply their own life paths and projects. Along the way, we considered the meanings of happiness, living well, success, and other key ideals that guide our lives. Far from prescribing “one best way” to live, this course was designed to open up thinking and discussion to multiple paths that are often unseen and rarely discussed.

Our readings, reflections, discussions, and projects ranged across fields as diverse as history, philosophy, literature, psychology, sociology, economics, political science, art, architecture, and technology. We read books from both the scholarly and popular presses. We took field trips to institutions in all sectors of society, including experimental housing and neighborhood developments. We invited guest speakers from the area and from other parts of the country. We read and heard about diverse approaches to the question, “How should we live?”

The think tank met throughout the 2006-2007 academic year. While the instructors designed the first semester of the course, the students assumed primary responsibility for constructing the second semester. The students chose to put on a fair at the Salt Lake City Library on Pace of Life.
